An experience that you wont necessarily find anywhere else. By Dan Adams The Stronghold series of games from Firefly Studios began in 2. It was an intriguing blend of gameplay that brought new challenges to both the city building and RTS genres. Sadly, after the release of Stronghold Crusader, the series slid in quality. With the last game, Stronghold Legends, the series materialized as only a shadow of the promise it once held a mediocre RTS that just happens to have castles. Even with the games suffering from poor execution in the later half of the franchise, the Strongholds other than Legends do offer up a heavy blend of combat and city builder that is unique to the series. There have been some city builders with combat like the Impressions games or the Settlers series, but none placed the same level of importance on martial matters. On the other side of the same token, there are very few RTS games that really bother to delve as deeply into economic simulation and city planning as Stronghold does. There certainly are games that do both sides better, but there are very few games that even attempt to blend the two facets together as strongly and evenly as the Stronghold games. Finally, especially in todays market, there are very few games that emphasize defensive strategy so heavily having abandoned base sieges for point capture victories and other objectives. For these reasons, RTS turtlers and city building fans that never got a chance to check out the Stronghold games may find this collection an easy way to experience the series for the first time. Most challenges in these games and fair warning, these games can be pretty challenging revolve around setting up castle walls to defend against inevitable enemy onslaught. But in order for your people to survive the siege and any destruction to productive outlying buildings, youll need to store up precious food, building materials, and weapons by setting up industry in and around your castle. All the while youll need to keep your citizens happy with different types of food, entertainment, law enforcement, and fair taxation levels. While the focus was defense in the first game, Stronghold Crusader, the gem of the collection, introduced the idea of attacking the enemy stronghold as well after fortifying your position and provided a tough but rewarding game that requires serious thought and planning. Stronghold 2 continued the tradition of encouraging turtle gameplay while introducing estates scattered around the map that could be captured for resources and money as well as the idea of honor that could be gained by living like a lord. It is a decent game that has gotten better with patches but still has enough bugs, AI problems, and graphical glitches to keep it from really being a worthy heir to the Stronghold throne. Legends only took away from the series and Stronghold Crusader Extreme brought out the whips and chains to punish Stronghold worshippers with insanely difficult level design. Firefly Studios announced that the first gameplay footage for Stronghold Crusader 2 was revealed at Gamescom 2013 in Colonge, Germany. An updated build of the game. Official company site. Includes details of published games, company and investor information, news, press releases and online store. Play Stronghold Kingdoms Now. Live the life of a medieval lord in Stronghold Kingdoms, the worlds first persistent castle MMO. A unique PC Strategy game, Stronghold. Find all sorts of cool towerdefense title among the 150 challenges here, saving any games you particularly like to your account favorites for later. These games werent exactly winning any beauty contests when they were released so it probably wont come as a surprise that they look even worse today. It doesnt help that the resolution on the early games can only be increased to 1. At least those games, when compared to Stronghold 2 and Legends, have some sense of style. Fireflys forays into 3. D are drab, depressing, and boring which is especially sad considering Legends adds mythical creatures. The new mobile version of Stronghold Kingdoms is finally available on the iOS App Store and will be coming Google Play on August 31st. This is both Firefly Studios. Presentation value has never been Fireflys strong suit. Voice acting, cutscenes, and all the rest are just plain bad. If youre looking for an awesome story to go along with your strategy you better look elsewhere. The total presentation package in Stronghold 2 is actually bad enough to be detrimental to the overall experience and Stronghold Legends isnt any better. The collection itself doesnt come with any extras to make the package more worth while. There arent even any paper manuals though the PDF manuals do come on the disc. The real question in a collection like this is of comparative value. If youve been itching to try the original Stronghold for the last nine years and havent yet found the motivation to get yourself to the store, this might be your chance. A quick search for Stronghold prices will bring up some outstanding mark ups on the original game from retailers, but gog. Stronghold Crusader Extreme includes the original Stronghold Crusader and its sadistic expansion set for anywhere from 7 to 2. Stronghold-Crusader-2.png' alt='Play Stronghold Crusader Game' title='Play Stronghold Crusader Game' />Stronghold 2 can be found from 1. Stronghold Legends from 1. If youre really planning to play all of the games in the collection, it comes out a bit better than even on the best individual prices together. The collection also has the nice advantage of not having to worry about finding and installing each patch. Of course, if you dont want to play Legends which would be very understandable then getting each game individually could potentially save you some money. The Stronghold Collection. The Stronghold Collection brings together five games from the critically acclaimed real time strategy RTS series that allows players to conquer the Middle Ages. The Verdict. I guess the thing to remember is that Stronghold is a unique license with an experience that you wont necessarily find anywhere else. While the games dont look good, they still manage to be fun mostly and offer up some pretty challenging scenarios that take good timing and planning to execute properly. Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader are definitely worth a look and remain solid games. Stronghold 2 is probably worth a look for some of the added features though, while improved from when it was released originally, still has core gameplay and interface issues that can be a aggravating. Stronghold Legends moves almost completely away from what made the series special by removing the economic and civic aspects of play but does include mythical creatures if youre into that. Youll just need to decide whether the extra five bucks or so to get the three best games in one collection is worth it for the convenience of finding everything you need on one disc. Otherwise you may want to search for deals and collect the parts individually as theres not much reason I can think of to recommend Legends. Game.
